National Data

Update: NRIIP Radiology Data Dashboard implemented, user Relaunch was carried out in March 2023 with good attendance from all Health Boards. Work continues to improve data quality across radiology in Scotland and use the data to inform a range of activities including service improvement, recovery planning and workforce planning.

Update: Standardised Coding agreement reached on Top 5 Codes to be standardised by September 2023. This work is imperative to enable the automation of triage of requests, safety checks and intelligent protocolling prior to scan. To date, three codes have been standardised (Scanner AE; Urgency & Patient Type) with the aim to complete the two remaining codes (RIS (Exam); Insource/Outsource).  Health Boards are expected to plan the implementation of the codes as soon as it is feasible.

Aim

The SRTP National Data Project aims to work collaboratively with SCIN, Public Health Scotland, NHS National Education for Scotland (NES), Scottish Government and staff in the territorial NHS Boards, to look at how we can improve data quality across radiology in Scotland and use that data to inform a range of activities including service improvement, recovery planning and workforce planning.

Objectives

To help deliver the data related recommendations in the Radiology Service Target Operating Model, including:

  • Implementation of a National radiology data dashboard for viewing standardised data from all health boards and national standardised coded datasets.
  • Making workforce information and clinical activity data available on a ‘real time’ basis.
  • Enabling a culture of transparent business information and data, driving collaboration, service improvement and supporting education.

How

The project has four main workstreams:

  • Standardised coding – mapping the current state of coding across the NHS Boards in Scotland and using this to inform how to take forward the standardisation of existing codes and to consider a more national approach to the approval of new codes.
  • Carry out wider evaluation and make recommendations for the way forward for a radiology dashboard to support a data driven service.
  • Develop the National Radiology Information and Intelligence Platform (NRIIP) to collate and share local Radiology Information System (RIS) data through the National Radiology Dashboards.

Who

The project team managing the delivery of the National Radiology Data project includes:

  • Clinical Lead – Dr Raj Burgul
  • Programme Manager – Laura Dodds
  • Project Manager – Craig Grant
  • Project Support Officer – Kelly Walker
