SNRRS Other Opportunities Project

Update: The SNRRS Bank, permanently hosted at NHS Golden Jubilee, delivers a vital radiology reporting service for NHS Scotland. The team continue to explore further opportunities to develop the service and support NHS board radiology departments.

The Scottish National Radiology Reporting Service (SNRRS) was set up to maximise the potential of new IT connectivity across Scotland which, for the first time, enabled consultant radiologists from anywhere in Scotland to report on exams from another NHS Board.

The initial project focused on creating and implementing the Scottish National Radiology Reporting Service (SNRRS) Bank to offer Boards an alternative to outsourcing exams to third party suppliers. Following a successful 12 month pilot, the SNRRS Bank has now become a permanent part of national radiology services hosted by NHS Golden Jubilee. As of end May 2022, there are 82 consultant radiologists reporting for the SNRRS Bank and 12 NHS Boards using the service, resulting in around 400 hours of reporting per week.

If you are interested in joining the SNRRS Bank, or learning more about it, please email snrrs@gjnh.scot.nhs.uk and the team will be happy to assist.

Aim

The SNRRS Other Opportunities Project has been initiated to continue to grow the SNRRS and to support and build on service achievements. The project aims to explore and develop the opportunities identified during the SNRRS Bank pilot. The SRTP and NHS Golden Jubilee will work together to meet the project’s objectives.

Objectives

  • Increase SNRRS reporting capacity including recruitment of reporting radiographers.
  • Increase cross boundary working including providing retired staff with a mechanism to contribute to cross boundary work.
  • Explore ways to create reporting networks (for example, subspecialty networks).
  • Ensure that workstation processes are robust and fit for purpose.

How

  • Work with NHS Golden Jubilee, SNRRS and relevant stakeholders to recruit reporting radiographers to the SNRRS Bank.
  • Configure IT connectivity to enable retired consultant radiologists to report for the SNRRS Bank.
  • Understand the radiology reporting needs of Boards and identify how reporting networks can add value to local reporting.
  • Work with partners to review and update workstation processes including quality assurance, procurement, delivery and maintenance.

Who

Delivery of the project has included widespread engagement with those experiencing, referring and operating within radiology services in Scotland.

The project team managing the delivery of the SNRRS project includes:

  • Clinical Lead – Dr Shalini Datta
  • Programme Manager – Jennifer Robertson
