Workforce Planning

Update: We are delighted to share the first Diagnostic Imaging Workforce Plan for NHS Scotland, which includes statements of support from the Royal College of Radiologists and Society and College of Radiographers, following final consultation and approval from members of the SRTP Workforce Planning Steering Group and Imaging Executive Board.

The Plan provides an overview of the workforce required to ensure delivery of a high-quality, sustainable diagnostic imaging service for the population of Scotland; evidences the gap between current and projected demand and capacity; and sets out a range of recommendations needed to address this gap. We encourage all those responsible for leadership and management of diagnostic imaging services in Scotland to fully utilise this Plan in support of local, regional and national planning. The workforce demand modelling tool developed as part of this work is available to download at the bottom of this page.

There is much work to be done, if we are to guarantee a future diagnostic imaging workforce with the capacity and capabilities to meet the ever increasing demands to provide high-quality imaging services for our patients.

In terms of next steps, it is anticipated that the Plan will become the responsibility of the new Scottish Strategic Network for Diagnostics (SSND) and to help ensure continuity, an initial piece of work will commence focused on prioritising the recommendations agreed within this Workforce Plan.

Aim

The aim of the Workforce Planning project is to deliver a national workforce plan for the radiology service in Scotland, based on data and professional judgement and building on the recommendations within the Radiology Service Target Operating Model.
